A Little Secret about Weddings
I have officiated over 100 weddings and I am going to let you in on a little secret. Weddings are not about dresses, food, flowers, buildings or even officiants (don’t tell the super secret very important officiant guild I said that).
WEDDINGS ARE ABOUT LOVE.
It is really easy to get caught up in all the little details when planning a wedding. You’ve probably spent months thinking about everything. What color the napkins should be, which cake flavor to choose, how the flowers will look. No one believes me when I tell them this but it is true. a few weeks after your wedding, most people won’t remember those things.
Years down the road, no one will recall how the cake tasted or exactly what shade the bridesmaids’ dresses were. What people will remember are the moments you cannot plan. Things like when someone starts giggling during the vows or the flower girl gets scared and runs back down the aisle. No one wants it to happen but every once in awhile a groomsman drops the ring and everyone has that “OH SH*T WHERE DID IT GO???” moment.
Those are the moments that make your wedding feel real and special.
So if something doesn’t go exactly how you imagined, it’s okay. This day is just one chapter in your love story.
The perfect wedding isn’t one where everything goes right; it’s the one where you get to marry the person you love.
If something goes wrong, maybe the flowers don’t match or the music starts late, DO NOT let it get to you. Laugh it off, enjoy the day, and focus on the love between you and your partner. Years from now, those little mishaps will be the funny stories you’ll look back on fondly.
If you only remember one thing from reading all my advice, please let it be this. A wedding isn’t about cakes or pictures or the dozens of other people in the room. It’s about having someone love you enough to stand across from you and make those vows to you.
